Clarity Affords Focus

Motivation Monday: Clarity

Confused?

Exactly! Without clarity, there is no focus. Clarity, by definition, means to have understanding, to see clearly.  With clarity there is no confusion, there is no chaos. Clarity is a quality to be desired and had. It is a goal to attain. It is practically the first step to any project. But how do you spend clarity?

Absence of Clarity

While it isn’t the first definition and one not typically seen in casual conversation. Afford can be defined as having the ability to do something without problems.  So my question is, can you afford focus with chaos or confusion?  No! With either of those things present you will encounter nothing but problems.  Are chaos and confusion sometimes necessary? Absolutely! Chaos and confusion are often in the beginning stages of a project.  It is where brainstorming occurs. It is where TONS of time can be wasted. All ideas and options are presented.  To do all of the ideas or options would be impossible, but it often times takes this chaos and confusion to lead to clarity.

Coming into Focus

Focus: Proverbs 16: 3 TattooEarlier this year I wrote a guest post where I discussed my One Little Word: Focus.  I spent an entire year studying this word and what it meant for my life.  I have this tattoo to forever remind me that if I want to obtain focus I must seek the Lord for direction (clarity). He is how I find my clarity. Perhaps not in the midst of a single project (although sometimes definitely so!), but rather which project to focus my efforts. It is through Him that I am able to afford focus. We all have so much thrown at us on a daily basis that it is no wonder we remain frozen and not quite certain of where to begin. Sometimes we have to begin with the word, NO. I have found more clarity in this word than most anything else. I have learned that sometimes the only way I can ever find clarity in one project is to say no, or not right now, to another project. Affording focus is just as often about sacrifice as it is about bringing order to chaos. That is actually part of the process of gaining clarity.

What about You?

What things do you do in your life that help to bring clarity so that you can afford the focus you need to complete projects?
